Jordan

The land of epic adventures like ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and ‘Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade’ and the recent sci-fi movie ‘The Martian,’ Jordan has vast deserts, dramatic landscapes, lost cities, and beautiful ancient ruins. The cultural influences of invaders, from ancient Romans to Ottomans and Europeans, shaped today’s country. The official language is Arabic, but English is widely spoken, especially in the cities, and the Jordanian people are exceptionally warm and welcoming. They will go to extremes to make sure your experience in their country is positive.

Why travel:

History & Petra: One cannot go to Jordan and miss visiting Petra, an ancient Nabatean city that was once a focal point of the trade between Africa, the Middle East with Europe, and Asia. Most visitors visit the well-known 2,000-year-old treasury, Al Khazneh but to explore Petra’s wonders of impressive buildings, amphitheaters, and caves, you need one full day. Not far from Petra lies Mount Nebo, where Moses first saw the Promised Land and Madaba, an ancient town known for its 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land. Visit Jerash, one of the best-preserved Greco-Roman towns in the world. If you are interested in history and megalithic monuments, Jordan is the place to visit!

Wadi Rum: Unusual terrain of the Wadi Rum desert has been featured as a stand-in for the moon or Mars landscapes in many movies and documentaries. It is home to the Bedouin, a semi-nomadic tribe that now offers a glimpse into their lifestyle through tented campsites, night walks for star gazing, and narrating folklores around the camp.

Amman: The capital of Jordan, Amman, is an exciting blend of ancient and modern. From the impressive Roman Theater to the old souks to the contemporary stores with big brand names and delicious food options at Rainbow Street, Amman is a treasure trove of historical sites and cultural activities. Make your own perfume in little perfume shops, learn to cook Arabic food, visit the Royal car museum, or relax at a Turkish bath!

Food: Jordan’s cuisine tends to be fresh and healthy. Mediterranean cuisine and freshly squeezed juice are available everywhere. The national dish is Mansaf, rice and marinated meat-based dish that Jordanians spend hours to make, and Maqloube, an upside-down meat, veggie, and rice dish. Jordan is also famous for its olive oil, the finest in the Middle East.

Dead Sea: The lowest spot on earth’s surface, the Dead Sea is actually a lake. Its salinity is ten times that of the ocean that enables swimmers to float effortlessly, and mud baths are said to have healing properties and attract people from all over the world.

Red Sea: The seaside city of Aqaba offers incredible opportunities to explore the gorgeous Red Sea with warm waters, vibrant coral reefs, and a dizzying array of marine life. Aqaba scuba diving sites are some of the world’s best and cater to all skill levels. Other activities include snorkeling, windsurfing, waterskiing, jet skiing, and sailing.
