Why travel
Maya Ruins: Archaeologists estimate that over one million Mayans lived in Belize from 300 to 900 AD. The country is full of Maya Ruins, and the largest site is Caracol, which is full of reservoirs, wells, and tombs. Others include the Mayan sites at Xunantunich, Altun Ha, Cahal Pech, and Lamanai.
The Great Blue Hole: Located a couple of miles off the coast, the Great Blue Hole is a natural wonder seen from outer space. It is one of the biggest attractions for SCUBA divers and snorkelers and offers an excellent opportunity to see geological wonders like giant stalactites, dripstone sheets, and amazing marine life such as Caribbean and nurse sharks, groupers, and a vast array of other fishes.
Belize Barrier Reef: The Belize Barrier Reef is the second-largest barrier reef in the world and offers world-class opportunities to scuba dive and snorkel
Caves: Belize’s ancient Mayans believed that caves served as an entrance to the underworld and conducted their sacred rituals and ceremonies there. Some still contain ceramics and human remains. A cave exploration adventures include Maya walk tours, ziplining, cave tubing, canoeing, hiking, and rappelling.
Nature and Wildlife: More than a third of Belize is either a protected nature reserve or a national park. You can take nature walks through a jungle with a naturalist to see toucans, parrots, monkeys, ocelots, and tapirs. Belize is home to the world’s only Jaguar preserve, the Cockscomb Wildlife Preserve.
Islands and Beaches: There are more than postcard-perfect tropical 200 islands in Belize known as ‘cayes’ that offer pristine and uncrowded beaches and excellent fishing, snorkeling, and diving.
