Day 1

Kigali - Akagera National Park

You are met at Kigali International Airport and visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial before your travel to the Akagera National Park via helicopter or road transfer. Magashi Camp is situated in the productive and phenomenally diverse north-eastern corner of Akagera National Park, overlooking scenic Lake Rwanyakazinga. Accommodation at Magashi is in six spacious and airy tented guest rooms that offer uninterrupted views over Lake Rwanyakazinga, while the main area comprises a luxurious lounge, dining and bar area, wine cellar, and pool, as well as an expansive viewing deck with a convivial firepit. The architecture and interiors pay homage to traditional Rwandan culture.

Day 2-3

Akagera National Park

Guests are able to view a range of wildlife on expertly-guided game drives, walks, and boating trips, including buffalo, lion, leopard, elephant, giraffe, spotted hyena, zebra, topi, roan, eland, and more. Akagera also boasts almost 500 species of birds including the spectacular shoebill with its implausibly massive bill and the near-endemic red-faced barbet.

Day 4

Volcanoes National Park

Return to Kigali via helicopter or road transfer for your onward three-hour road transfer to Volcanoes National Park. The area around Bisate welcomes you with dramatic views of the peaks of the volcanoes Bisoke, Karisimbi, and Mikeno rearing up through the Afro-alpine forests of nearby Volcanoes National Park. Six sumptuous en-suite rooms maximize comfort, warmth, and views while retaining environmental principles and reflecting the culture of surrounding rural Rwanda.

Day 5-6

Volcanoes National Park

Gorilla trekking takes place from Volcanoes National Park headquarters where guests are allocated one of the 12 habituated gorilla groups to visit for an hour. After a briefing by Park rangers, the time of the trek varies depending on which gorilla group is being visited - from 45 minutes to a few hours. Trekking is at a high altitude but is well work it in order to spend time in the company of mountain gorilla. Exploring the area includes community visits, birding, golden monkey tracking, and helping reforest the area, as well as visits (time permitting) to Iby’wacu cultural village, the Twin Lakes of Ruhondo, and Burera, and Dian Fossey’s grave.

Depart for home or extend your journey

Depart Volcanoes National Park via a three-hour road transfer for Kigali International Airport and your onward travel arrangements.

Camps:

 

Magashi Camp: Perched on Magashi Peninsula, Magashi, a Classic Camp looks out over scenic Lake Rwanyakazinga towards the Mutumba Mountains in the west. On the peninsula’s western side, waterbuck, impala, and warthog can often be seen grazing, while on the eastern flank, eland frequent the lakeshore. The shore itself offers views of hippo, large crocodiles, and a chance of elephant bulls, while the core of the Amahoro lion pride is encapsulated by this spit of land.

Accommodation consists of six spacious and airy tented guest rooms that offer uninterrupted views over Lake Rwanyakazinga while Magashi’s main area comprises a luxurious lounge and dining area, bar and pool, as well as an expansive viewing deck with convivial fire pit. The architecture and interiors pay homage to traditional Rwandan culture.

 

Bisate Lodge: Bisate Lodge, a Premier Camp, has dramatic views of the Bisoke and Karisimbi volcano peaks rising through the forests of nearby Volcanoes National Park. It is within easy driving distance of Park Headquarters, from where once-in-a-lifetime gorilla treks depart daily. Exploring around Bisate includes community visits, birding, golden monkey tracking, and helping reforest the area, Gorilla Guardian Village, the Twin Lakes of Ruhondo and Burera, as well as Dian Fossey’s burial site.

Six opulent en-suite Forest Villas are warmed by a central fireplace and have breathtaking views from the deck. The main area comprises a lounge, dining and bar area, wine cellar, and viewing deck. Both the architecture and interiors are rooted in Rwandan cultural traditions.
